Carvalho started his coaching career in 2013 after completing his sports studies in his home country of Brazil. In 2015, at the age of 27, he went to Ukraine. There he coached a group of players from Shakhtar Donetsk. Among them Marlos Bonfim. The Brazilian-born Ukrainian midfielder doubled his scoring rate under Lucas Carvalho's training, was named Ukraine's Player of the Year, and also made the Europa League Team of the Season. After a year in Kiev, the coach moved to Manchester. From then on, he accompanied Memphis Depay as an individual coach. At that point, the then 22-year-old Dutch winger had struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since his move to Manchester United in 2015. Under both Louis Van Gaal and José Mourinho, Depay only made sporadic appearances. Despite this difficult time for the player Carvalho still managed to push him to his limits in extra training sessions and kept his motivation high. However, after the winger had only 134 minutes of playing in the first half of the 16/17 season, the coach and player decided to transfer to a new club.

Carvalho and his protégé went to France. Their next stop was Olympique Lyon. From the first moment, the Dutchman was given the necessary confidence and the more than one hundred training sessions with Lucas Carvalho paid off. In the second half of the 16/17 season Memphis Depay already marked 13 scorer points and in the following season, 36 more goal contributions were added. However after one successful year of working together, Carvalho and Depay went separate ways as Carvalho wanted to move back to Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, he then worked with numerous players from the first and second Brazilian league until the end of 2017.
